About
The NYPD Aviation SCUBA Team is a specialized unit within the New York City Police Department that combines aviation support with underwater rescue and recovery operations. Operating under the NYPD’s Special Operations Division, the team is composed of highly trained police officers who are certified divers and are equipped to respond to emergencies in and around New York City’s extensive waterways.
New York City is surrounded by water—including the Hudson River, East River, Harlem River, Upper and Lower New York Bay, and numerous bridges and waterfront structures—making maritime safety a critical part of public safety operations. The Aviation SCUBA Team supports missions such as search and rescue, drowning response, evidence recovery, submerged vehicle searches, infrastructure inspections, and counterterrorism preparedness.
The unit works closely with other NYPD divisions, including the Harbor Unit, Emergency Service Unit (ESU), and Counterterrorism Bureau. In urgent situations, Aviation assets (helicopters) can transport divers quickly to remote or difficult-to-access locations, deploy them near incident sites, and coordinate aerial oversight during operations.
Team members undergo rigorous dive training, including cold-water operations, low-visibility diving, night diving, and recovery techniques. They also train for hazardous conditions such as strong currents, limited visibility, and contaminated water environments—common challenges in New York City waterways.
